Tzvetan Todorov - Narrative theory.
Todorov is a Russian theorist, he was one of the most influencial theorists in the media. He said that all narratives follow a three part structure. The narrative begins with the equilibrium, where everything is balanced and supposedly 'normal', progress as something comes along to disrupt the equilibrium which is the climax and finally reach a resolution. When equilibrium is restored and it returns to a new equilibrium.
Todorovs theory can be applied to all narratives weither it is a music video, film, documentary etc. Todorovs theory is seen to be a more formal way of thinking up a beginning, middle and end of the narrative.
Disruption - (Something disruptive happens what makes people ask)
Recognition - (They recongnise what caused the disruption)
Repair - (They attempt to repair the disruption)
New Equilibrium (Returns back to normal day to day life)
How does my films follow this theory?
Well throughout my film all my characters will be doing 'a day to day normal life' with going to work, chilling with friends, playing video games and just chilling listening to music.
During my film drugs will be introduced which is a new thing for my main character. For some people this would be a day to day thing but not for my main character.
Towards the end of my film the main characters girl friend knows that the he is changing and its because of the drugs. He is changing in a bad way.
This is where my film takes a turn for the worst and that there is no repair, instead my main character kills his girlfriend. Which in some way is a repair because my main character doesn't want his parents to find out.
Now once again its kind of going back to a normal routine but its not his normal life its 10 years later and hes a lot older and doesn't really remember doing anything because of the drugs.
After studying the theory and linking it to my film parts of my film do correspond with the theory but some of my film doesn't. I don't really have a repair to repair in my eyes is the killing of his friend and the new equilibrium is when we see him after so many years.
